Diagonal Large Group State Speech Diagonal High School took an improvisational acting group to the State Speech Contest in Waukee on February 8th and brought home an overall Division 2 rating, which is considered very good. Performers were Junior Lydia Hoffman; Sophomores Ashlynn Allee and Kylie Hubbard; and Freshmen Cadance Shiflett and Jaylynn Doolittle. Coach Pam Hoffman says, “The group draws 3 situations and then they have 2 minutes to decide which situation to use and plan their strategy. Then they have up to 5 minutes to perform it. Our team performed Getting Lost in a Magical Forest. These kids are not afraid to go from any sporting event to a live performance in the blink of an eye!”

Here’s an inside look into what first grade has been up to lately: Last week, the kids were hard at work making a “1st Grade Thanksgiving Cookbook.” We first talked about what our favorite things are to eat at Thanksgiving, then discussed how recipes are written in steps/an order (which is similar to our informational texts that we have been looking at during reading) and is an example of how-to writing. The kids came up with their recipes and drew a picture to go along with it. Each 1st grader is going home with their own copy! 🦃🥧🍂

For the past few years, our National Honor Society Store has quietly provided essential hygiene items to students in grades 6-12 at Diagonal Community Schools. This resource ensures that any student who needs items such as shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste etc. can access them privately and without barriers. We owe a huge thank you to the United Church of Diagonal for their incredible generosity in giving us a jumpstart on this school year. Their support has sustained the store until now, allowing us to focus on helping our students. As we move forward, the National Honor Society is reaching out to our amazing community to help restock the store for the months ahead. To make it easy, we’ve set up an Amazon Store (https://www.amazon.com/registries/gl/guest-view/37S0TE7M1SU2W) , where you can purchase items that will be shipped directly to the school. We are so grateful to be part of such a giving community, and we know that with your help, the NHS Store will continue to be a source of support for our students. Whether you choose to donate or share this effort with others, you’re making a real difference for the kids in our school. Thank you for showing up for our students time and time again. Questions? Reach out to Mrs. Taylor Bentley or a National Honor Society member. ❤️

Fall Play Updates! The Diagonal Drama Club is making preparations for its upcoming play called The Day the Internet Died. Director Pam Hoffman added several local businesses and community members to the script. Hoffman says, “I was allowed to personalize this script after royalties were paid. That makes it fun for both the actors and the audience! We’ve all been laughing as we work up scenes! Come to find out who is mentioned!” The play shows Friday, November 8 at 7 pm in the Diagonal Daycare. Tickets are $5 at the door. An auction for baked goods and other food items will be held at intermission as a fundraiser for all things speech and drama. Everyone is welcome to contribute sale items. Simply drop them off at the door when you buy your ticket for the show. The Day the Internet Died is written by Ian McWethy and Jason Pizzarello, and it is produced by special arrangement with Stage Partners. Students have even been workshopping Scenes to determine how to spin their lines!
