Diagonal Large Group State Speech Diagonal High School took an improvisational acting group to the State Speech Contest in Waukee on February 8th and brought home an overall Division 2 rating, which is considered very good. Performers were Junior Lydia Hoffman; Sophomores Ashlynn Allee and Kylie Hubbard; and Freshmen Cadance Shiflett and Jaylynn Doolittle. Coach Pam Hoffman says, “The group draws 3 situations and then they have 2 minutes to decide which situation to use and plan their strategy. Then they have up to 5 minutes to perform it. Our team performed Getting Lost in a Magical Forest. These kids are not afraid to go from any sporting event to a live performance in the blink of an eye!”

The team with Lydia Hoffman, Aslynee Allee, Kylie Hubbard, Cadence Shiflett, and Jaylynn Doolittle received a Division 1 rating, which is considered excellent, and they will advance on to the state contest in Waukee on February 8th. The team with Owen Whittington, EJ Allee, Jacob Taylor, and Weston Drake received a Division 2 rating, which is considered very good. Congratulations to both teams for their hard work and willingness to do impromptu acting with no script and only 2 minutes prep time!

school based services are now available. what is classroom clinic? Classroom Clinic provides behavioral supports and mental health services to students at school via telehealth. At the request of a parent, a student can receive an evaluation by a Classroom Clinic provider. Examples might include: behavioral evaluation, medication management (if needed), implementing therapy, and/or collaborating with the school regarding classroom strategies to ensure student success. HOW DO I KNOW MY CHILD MIGHT BENEFIT FROM SERVICES? Signs that a child may need help through therapy or a behavior evaluation varies from child to child. Some examples may include: • Difficulties paying attention, can't sit still, fidgets • Argumentative, defensive, defies authority • Hyper verbal, interrupts, difficulty knowing boundaries • Getting "in trouble" often • Excessive worry or sadness • Separation anxiety and clinginess • Does not want to go to school • Frequent temper tantrums, meltdowns • Visits school nurse often or complains often of stomach aches, headaches, or other aches and pains with no cause Classroom Clinic HOW TO ACCESS SERVICES *** Contact Nurse Lacy to set up services at the school by calling 641-734-5331 or emailing her at Idoolittle@diagonalschools.org WHO PROVIDES SERVICES? Licensed mental health specialists including Nurse Practitioners and Therapists. WHERE ARE APPOINTMENTS HELD? Appointments are held at the school in a private and secure room. No school staff will be present during the visit unless requested by the parent. DO SERVICES COST ANYTHING? Services function just like a visit to any other medical provider. Insurance information is collected during the the intake process. Any copays or co-insurance not covered by health insurance are the family's responsibility and will be billed accordingly. DO PARENTS ATTEND THE APPOINTMENTS? Parents are required to attend all initial appointments and all appointments with the nurse practitioner. Parents do not need to attend the majority of therapy appointments.

Here’s an inside look into what first grade has been up to lately: Last week, the kids were hard at work making a “1st Grade Thanksgiving Cookbook.” We first talked about what our favorite things are to eat at Thanksgiving, then discussed how recipes are written in steps/an order (which is similar to our informational texts that we have been looking at during reading) and is an example of how-to writing. The kids came up with their recipes and drew a picture to go along with it. Each 1st grader is going home with their own copy! 🦃🥧🍂
